Mental Health First Aid training is exactly what it sounds like. It is training for everyone who may find themselves in the company of someone needing immediate intervention, whether you have some type of clinical background or not. At the end of the day, you will be able to recognize the indicators that someone around you is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Have you ever been in the company of someone "having a meltdown," or behaving in a way that causes you to be concerned about the person's ability to carry out every day functions, like work, or the normal challenges of relationships, like parenting? The first aid is given until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis resolves.
Like any other first aid course, a concrete Action Plan will be taught to participants of Mental Health First Aid to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid is taught by Stephanie Simon, Director of the Bridgeway Crisis Intervention Services in Jersey City, and Hudson County CIT Mental Health Coordinator.
